The Tunics are a young (average age 19) three-piece from Croydon with a unique brand of lyric-driven, incisive rock & roll. The Tunics are Joe Costello (vocals + guitar), Scott Shepherd (bass + backing vocals), and Joe Blanks (percussion). Their sound is their own, so the inevitable comparisons that try to label them lie all over the rock spectrum from Oasis to The Reverend to Wombats to The Libertines, but are unable to pin them down. But on one thing all agree: the sound is thrilling.
The band got their first break in 2006, amazingly, only a few months after forming, when they played their first London show. Shortly after, they signed to Manta Ray Music in London.
Three years down the road, they have recorded their debut album Somewhere in Somebody’s Heart with James Lewis (Wombats, Arctic Monkey…), welcomed a drumming prodigy into the band, and played to audiences all over the UK. The result is two videos on E4; radio play on BBC, XFM, and indie stations in Australia, US, and Germany; critical acclaim from NME, The Fly, blogs, and industry insiders from LA to Australia; and a live performance that has evolved and been honed to mesmerize audiences.
Sublime and heart-stopping drums, intricate bass lines, beautiful guitar riffs and alternating sweet and urgent vocals that talk of hope with dark tales of wit and suspicion drive The Tunics’ high voltage performances. “Every gig I am putting my heart on my sleeve“ Costello reveals, “There’s a reason for every lyric and when you’re playing you remember why you wrote it. It’s all very natural“
